PTE 79 Australia PR - Worried It Is Not Enough? 2026 Guide

You see an old Australia PR post saying PTE 79 in every skill gives you Superior English. Then you open the 2026 score table and see PTE 69, 70, 85, and 88. Now the number 79 feels like a trap. Did the rule get harder? Is your old PTE report useless? Should you change to IELTS 8? These questions are behind searches for PTE 79 Australia PR 2026, PTE Superior English, and 20 points for English Australia skilled visa.

The short answer is this: the test date matters more than the number you remember. Australia changed the approved English-test scores on 7 August 2025. An older PTE result and a newer PTE result can have different score patterns, even though both are called PTE Academic.

Superior English is worth 20 points, but it is not a visa invitation

For points-tested skilled visas, Superior English can give you 20 points. Proficient English can give you 10 points. The English points sit inside the bigger points test with age, education, work experience, Australian study, partner factors, and other items.

So a language score can make your Expression of Interest stronger, but it does not promise an invitation. The pass mark, occupation, state rules, invitation round, and quota still matter. Do not let a coaching post turn “20 English points” into “PR secured.”

First write down the visa subclass you are considering, such as 189, 190, or 491. Then check the English definition used for that subclass. A score that proves Superior English for one purpose may not solve a separate skills assessment, registration, or employer requirement.

The 2026 PTE Superior English table is not PTE 79 in every skill

For a PTE Academic test taken on or after 7 August 2025, the Department of Home Affairs table lists these minimum scores for Superior English:

There is no overall PTE score in this Superior English test. You need the minimum in each of the four components. A PTE overall score of 79 does not automatically pass. For example, 90 Listening, 90 Reading, 70 Writing, and 90 Speaking still misses the writing requirement.

This feels strange because Writing and Speaking are much higher than the old 79 pattern. The table is not a typo. It is the current pattern for the post-change PTE test. Check your test report by skill, not only the large overall number at the top.

The old PTE 79 rule still matters for some old reports

For a PTE Academic test taken on or before 6 August 2025, the Department lists 79 in Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking for Superior English. Results from that period may be used for Australian visa purposes until 6 August 2028, inclusive, depending on the visa.

That last part is important. “May be used” does not mean every person can use every old report until the same day. The relevant visa subclass decides the evidence window. You should check the visa page and the Department’s current Superior English page before you count the result in an EOI or visa application.

Pearson and an immigration department may show different validity ideas. A school may look at two years, while the Department can use a visa-specific window. Save the test date, score report, and visa rule together. Do not use an app reminder as your only legal check.

IELTS 8 each is the simpler-looking comparison

For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the Department lists IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training at 8 in each of the four components for Superior English. The old table also shows 8 in each skill for IELTS. This makes the IELTS number easier to remember, but the preparation is not automatically easier.

IELTS gives you a live Speaking interview with an examiner. PTE uses a computer-delivered format and recorded speaking tasks. IELTS Writing requires you to manage two tasks with band criteria. PTE Writing and Speaking targets can be high in different ways. Choose based on your habits, not on a friend’s lucky score.

If you already have three IELTS 8s and one 7.5, One Skill Retake may look useful. The Department says IELTS results that include One Skill Retake are accepted for eligible visas, so eligible is doing real work here. Check the visa subclass before assuming a retake will create the English points you need.

PTE and IELTS points are not the same as school scores

A university may ask for IELTS 6.5 or a particular PTE score. That can be enough for admission but far below Superior English for a future points-tested visa. Regulated occupations may also have a separate registration target.

Before booking, write: school or employer target, visa minimum, and points target: Proficient or Superior. One score should not quietly stand in for three different decisions.

Old test results need a date and a visa check, not a screenshot

Find your official score report and record the test date. If it is before 7 August 2025, compare it with the old table. If it is after that date, compare it with the new component table. Check that your name and passport details match the identity used in your application.

Then open the official visa page for your subclass. Read the part about English evidence and the timing rule. An invitation date, visa application date, and EOI update are not interchangeable. Keep the report with your EOI notes, and do not delete it if you later retake the test.

Do not book a remote PTE or IELTS test for visa points

The Department says it does not accept English tests delivered completely online, also called remote-proctored or at-home tests, for Australian visa purposes. It gives examples such as IELTS Online and other home editions.

This is an easy mistake because “online booking” and “online test” sound almost the same. You can book a secure test-centre appointment through a website. That does not make it an at-home test. Read the delivery method, location, and result type before paying.

If a test centre is far away, add travel and appointment availability to your plan. A booking that cannot be used for the visa is not cheap. The immigration page has the final word.

A simple way to choose PTE or IELTS

Try one realistic practice session for each test before you commit. Use a real timer, your normal headset if relevant, and no pause button. Compare:

• Can you speak at the needed pace without becoming too quiet?
• Can you write clearly while watching time?
• Do you lose marks from grammar, spelling, pronunciation, or task action?
• Can you practise the same format four days a week?

PTE may fit you if you like a computer, fast transitions, typing, and recorded answers. IELTS may fit you if a human Speaking interview feels more natural. Neither test is a shortcut. Choose the format where your weak habit can be repaired.

The writing and speaking targets need a different PTE plan

For post-change PTE Superior English, Writing at 85 and Speaking at 88 deserve special attention. Do not spend every study session chasing a bigger overall score. Review the exact tasks that feed these skills.

For Writing, check whether your answer addresses every part of the prompt, has clear sentence control, and finishes within time. Rewrite one answer after you find two repeated mistakes. A long list of grammar rules is less useful than seeing the same article error in five answers.

For Speaking, practise loud and steady delivery. Check whether you stop in the middle of a sentence, swallow word endings, or lose content when you rush. Include the newer tasks in your practice, especially Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. A memorised paragraph can sound smooth and still answer the wrong situation.

A four-week plan for a PTE 79-to-Superior decision

In week one, verify the visa subclass, date rule, and exact target. Take one full practice test and save the component scores.

In week two, work on the lowest component and one task that causes the loss. Use short timed sets, then label each error as language, memory, timing, or test action.

In week three, add the current PTE question types and complete two mixed sessions. Keep the same headset and room setup when possible.

In week four, take one full test-like session and compare it with week one. If Writing or Speaking is still far from 85 or 88, believe the pattern. More random questions will not fix a named problem. Give yourself more time or compare IELTS before paying for another PTE date.
